our lives

our fosters - mcbean fostered 05.03.06 - 10.15.06

05.03.06 - McBean was dropped off to me at my office today by a volunteer. He was rescued from a very high kill shelter in Kern County this past weekend. I had told my partners at Pit Bull Rescue San Diego that I wanted to be able to foster many different breeds. McBean appears to be a wire haired terrier mix. He stunk pretty badly and is riddled with fleas. He seems to be very young - I'd guess 6 weeks. He doesn't walk super well - that funny little wide legged waddle of a new puppy. He hasn't quite mastered a voice and has a squeaky little bark. His eyes are still very light which would say that they only just turned from blue.

He handled meeting lots of different people at my office very well - tromping right up to each one as if he'd known them all his short life. When I got home, he was not at all afraid of Borrego and got under her feet a lot without any nervousness. He lets me touch him everywhere - ears, paws, tail, hips, teeth. He seems to like having his ears rubbed. He also did well in his first bath. He was afraid at first but then seemed to accept that that was what was happening and started to explore the tub. So far we have had no accidents in the house. He went three hours in the crate with no accidents and then went straight out to potty. He went towards the back door one time tonight and, when I let him out, he did his business and then came back in. So far I'm in love...

09.02.06 - Sorry I didn't keep this as up to date as I should have. McBean (Beanie) was an amazing foster. I was very much in love with him and hoped he would stay with us forever. He changed quite a bit while at our home and fit in so well. Borrego would have voted him in in an instant if she could and Midnight fairly danced to get into our home to play with him. Unfortunately for me and fortunately for him, the perfect application came along and McBean moved to Carlsbad after 4 months with me. His new mom absolutely dotes on him and I anticipate he'll have a long and spoiled life.

09.09.06 - I guess I spoke too soon. McBean moved back in with us today as his new mom found that he didn't fit her lifestyle has she had hoped. She was very upset at returning him and we both cried. Beanie was a little disconcerted to find that we already had another foster but after a few initial spats, they settled in just fine. 10.15.06 - McBean moved in today with his new adoptive mom. This one I am pretty certain will stick. He will have two siblings, mini schnauzers. He's met them and gets along with one of the two. The other may take some time but they don't fight or anything - just ignore one another. His new human mom is wonderful and I could see her being my friend so I could easily see her treating him as I would treat him (and that's one of my criteria). I am endlessly sad about losing him and the house feels so empty but I know that he's in a good place and that I am doing the right thing for his life.
